Dei portuali ho capito che facevano un lavoro spaventoso.

C’era un’unica ambulanza in tutto il porto.

I portuali non avevano tute di protezione e si coprivano i piedi con degli stracci.

Lavoravano in situazioni di pericolo costante.

Come lavoravano? Entravano nelle celle frigorifere nudi, prendevano quarti di bue e uscivano nel calore della città.

Lavoravano in condizioni assolutamente ignobili.

Dovevano andare alla chiamata tutti.

Quelli che venivano chiamati si fermavano a lavorare e quelli che non venivano chiamati tornavano a casa.

Il porto era organizzato con una ingiustizia totale.

Io sono sempre stata dalla parte di chi non può parlare, di chi è schiacciato dal potere e per questo li ho fotografati.

Con grandissimo amore per loro e con grandissimo interesse.

Ho sempre fotografato con una Leica.

Avevo tre obiettivi: 35, 50 e 90.

E con questi tre obiettivi fotografavo quello che potevo.

Il portuale, per esempio, l’ho fotografato con un 90 perché ero lontana.

La Leica è sempre stata la macchina della mia vita, la adoro.

Ne ho ancora tre.

I came to understand that some dock workers had a dreadful job.  

There was only one ambulance for the whole dock.

Dock workers didn’t have overalls and they covered their feet with rags.

They constantly worked in dangerous situations.

How did they work? They went naked into refrigerating rooms, took quarters of ox and then went out into the heat of the city.

They worked in absolutely horrendous conditions.

Everybody had to go to the recruitment call.

Those whose names were called stayed to work and the others went back home.

The dock was organised with total injustice.

I’ve always sided with those who are voiceless and crushed by power, and this is why I photographed them.

With huge interest and a great love for them.

I always took photographs with a Leica.

I had three lenses: 35, 50 and 90.

And with these three lenses I photographed what I could.

For instance, I photographed this view of dock life with a 90 because of the distance.

Leicas have always been the cameras of my life, I adore them.

I still have three of them.
